eLearning in Christian education

a drip-feed of information on the technology, the theology and the practice

News, and an apology

1.  First, the apology: I'm sorry that it's a month since I circulated the last eLearning newsletter.  We are entering a period of major building works at home (from where I work) and time is getting gobbled (more at item 7 below).

2.  Three Connected Community Learning courses are running at present.  I am particularly pleased that Mission: Tradition Confronts the Future is going so well - a bunch of mature people looking at mission in our own contexts by reading and reflecting on Christianity Rediscovered (Vincent Donovan).  This is the first time I've run a course based around an off-line book.  The quality of the discussions is exceptionally high.

3.  You may like to put in your diary Learning Solutions 2004, which incorporates what was the eLearning Show.  It's at the Business Design Centre in Islington on 25 and 26 May 2004.  There are some free keynotes, a sizeable exhibition (free) and a number of seminars at £90 each.  I've found the time and the cost of the trip to London worth it for a number of helpful conversations on software and techniques, and the free talks.  Let me know if you're planning to go and would like to meet for coffee.  More info at www.learnevents.com.

4.  One of the best value sources of conferences is The eLearning Network.  On 26th March, their next event is “Do we need management systems?” and is on learning management systems, skills management systems and virtual classrooms, amongst other things.  £95 + VAT for the day, in London, more info at www.elearningnetwork.org.

5.  eLearninternational 2004 took place in Edinburgh last month.  If you'd like an outline report, go to www.newod.co.uk/publications.asp.  If you want to download full presentations, go to the eLearninternational web site.  There is, for example, eLearning: A philosophical enquiry by Gordon Graham, Regius Professor of Moral Philosophy in the University of Aberdeen.

6.  Macromedia are pushing their new product Breeze.  If you can be in London for breakfast, there are free seminars on March 24th and 30th.  Go to the Macromedia site to book.  Or to the product information area for various on-line presentations.  Breeze is more to do with distributing, for example, a lecture or presentation with reduced content authoring time and cost, less to do with collaborative on-line learning.

7.  Rather than try to keep too many balls in the air, I plan to suspend the regular newsletter until the autumn; but if there is hot or particularly interesting news, I'll circulate it.  I remain available for consultation, discussion or advice as usual, as always on a ‘whatever you can afford’ basis.

Yours in Christ,

Peter Nicholls

An exhibition in May, a conference in March, a product now and reports from an international event in February.
